Waqf and the Transformation of Arabic Language and Islamic Studies Education: Developing an Institutional Framework for Curriculum Reorientation in Northeast Nigeria

The limited integration of contemporary societal needs, practical competencies and sustainable development priorities into Arabic Language and Islamic Studies curricula presents an important challenge to the relevance of these disciplines in Northeast Nigeria. Although both disciplines possess rich linguistic, intellectual, moral and ethical foundations, their educational potential is not always translated into practical knowledge and competencies that address learners' socioeconomic realities, community development and peaceful coexistence. This study examines the institutional role of waqf in reorienting Arabic Language and Islamic Studies curricula towards contemporary educational and societal priorities. Specifically, it explores the relevance of waqf to curriculum transformation, identifies the competencies that can be strengthened through the two disciplines, and develops a conceptual framework for integrating waqf-supported educational initiatives into curriculum objectives, teaching practices and learning outcomes. The study adopts a qualitative conceptual and analytical approach, drawing on relevant Islamic scholarship, literature on waqf and curriculum development, and contemporary educational and sustainable development perspectives. The analysis reveals that Arabic Language and Islamic Studies offer considerable potential for developing communication, critical thinking, ethical reasoning, problem-solving, social responsibility, entrepreneurship and peacebuilding competencies. It further establishes that waqf can provide an institutional and financial mechanism for translating these curricular objectives into practical educational interventions through scholarships, teacher development, learning resources, skills acquisition, educational infrastructure and community-based partnerships. However, the effective realisation of this potential requires stronger alignment between curriculum content, competency-based pedagogy, assessment practices and institutional support. The study concludes that waqf should be repositioned beyond its conventional charitable function as a strategic institutional partner in curriculum reorientation and educational development. Its principal contribution is the proposed conceptual framework that connects waqf governance and educational financing with curriculum innovation, competency development and community transformation. The framework provides a context-sensitive basis for strengthening the relevance of Arabic Language and Islamic Studies to sustainable development and peaceful coexistence in Northeast Nigeria.
