Fault-Tolerant Control of Three-Phase Converter Motor Drive System Based on FCS-MPC

Reliable fault-tolerant operation is essential to single-phase-input three-phase-output converter-fed induction motor drive systems in some special applications. In this article, we present a reconfigurable fault-tolerant control scheme for such motor drive systems. As the studied fault-tolerant strategy and the normal-operation control scheme are both built within the model predictive control framework, many shared data can be fully utilized, and the computational burden is relatively low. By isolating and reconnecting designated components, the power converter topology is reconstructed to realize fault tolerance without stopping the drive system. The proposed scheme enables the system to successfully transition to a fault-tolerant operation mode and sustains continuous motor operation even if one of the inverter branches is completely lost, with no requirement for extra redundant bridge arms and thereby avoiding additional hardware cost. The effectiveness and correctness of the studied scheme are validated through experimental results.
