Accessory tragus: a rare congenital anomaly with characteristic histopathological features
Accessory tragus is an uncommon benign congenital anomaly of the external ear, usually presenting as a solitary preauricular skin-coloured papule or polypoid lesion. We report a case of accessory tragus in a 3-year-old girl who presented with a left preauricular swelling measuring 1.5 × 0.8 cm, present since birth. The lesion was firm, fixed and non-tender and was excised completely. Based on the characteristic histomorphological features, a diagnosis of accessory tragus was made. Although usually clinically innocuous, accessory tragus may mimic other congenital cutaneous lesions, making histopathological examination important for definitive diagnosis. Complete excision is curative and is associated with an excellent prognosis.
