Osteometric Study of the Neck of Femur in Northern Zone of Bangladesh

Background: The body's longest and strongest bone is the femur. It forms the hip joint by articulating with the hip bone's acetabulum. In Anthropology, Archaeology, Anatomy and Forensic Medicine, the evaluation of femoral neck is crucial because it yields precise data. Objectives: The purpose of the study was to measure the osteometric features of femur neck (length and diameter of the neck of femur, neck shaft angle and anteversion angle of femur). Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out on 390 dry adult human femurs over the course of a year, from July 2022 to June 2023, at the Department of Anatomy, Rajshahi Medical College, Rajshahi. Results: Mean length of the neck of femur, neck diameter, neck shaft angle and femoral ante version angle of femur were 33.54±3.10 mm, 28.79±2.37 mm, 123.05±3.08 degree and 15.34±1.34 degree, respectively. Total length and diameter of the neck were significantly greater in left side than right side (p < 0.05 in both cases). But neck shaft angle and femoral anteversion angle were not statistically different between the right and left side (p > 0.05 in both cases). Conclusion: According to the study's findings, understanding the various diameters of femoral neck might be crucial for orthopaedic surgery for prostheses, fracture fixation and radiology for identifying bone pathology, age determination.
