A supply chain life cycle framework using social exchange theory
Purpose The purpose of this research is to develop supply chain life cycle theory using the concepts of supply chain uncertainty, supply chain orientation and social exchange theory. Design/methodology/approach This research employs conceptual research methodology to develop theoretical propositions of the relationships that are fundamental to supply chain processes, while following established theory-building guidelines in supply chain management. Findings Supply chain processes must be examined longitudinally, sequentially and as multiple cycles of events and conditions of multiple firms. Doing so can provide theoretical insights into the birth, continuance and dissolution of supply chains. Originality/value This research offers a temporal, process explanation of how supply chain uncertainty may generate supply chain orientation and supply chain management responses, how those responses subsequently alter uncertainty and how this recursive process may help explain the emergence, continuation, adaptation and dissolution of SCM activities and supply chains.
