Annitella pyrenaea

Annitella pyrenaea (Navás, 1930) = Annitella pyrenea in Lavandier (1979). DIST. A. pyrenaea is an endemic species of the Pyrenees, relatively rare in our samples. According to Décamps (1967), this species occurred in the littoral zone of altitude lakes, but also in springs bordering lakes in the subalpine zone or sometimes in the lentic zone of flowing waters. Similarly, Lavandier cited the species as a lake species (“ Annitella pyrenea – espèce lacustre … ” p. 169) and considered the adults captured as dispersal individuals. On the contrary, we confirmed, with four pupae and one larva, that the species was able to complete its life cycle in the lentic zones of the Estaragne river (sites R and D) and at least in one tributary (site a 3). Note that, as only pupae and adults can be morphologically identified, we performed molecular analysis on the larvae and on one adult male (respectively PP 387755 and PP 387754) to validate the larva identification.
