Chess for Kids Aged 5 to 8: Attention Spans and Learning Patterns in Live Online Lessons
Teaching chess to a five-year-old through a screen sounds improbable until you watch it work. This practitioner paper records what Superior Chess Academy's coaches have observed about children aged 5 to 8 learning chess in live online lessons, drawing on more than 30,000 hours of live coaching delivered to 1,000+ students aged 5 and above across 20+ countries. It describes the attention patterns coaches observe in this age band, the lesson structures that hold attention reliably, the role of the parent in the room, and how motivation works at this age. All findings are qualitative and practice-based, offered as practitioner experience rather than experimental results.
