Smart nanobiopolymers for programmed bioactive delivery and sustainable food packaging: Molecular design, materials manufacturing, safety and translational challenges
Macromolecular carbohydrate based nanoconjugates represent a paradigm shift in intelligent food packaging, enabling real time detection of spoilage indicators and adulterants. However, translating these materials from laboratory concepts to practical applications requires a deep understanding of how manufacturing choices dictate their functional performance. Advanced manufacturing processes including solution casting, electrospinning, spray coating and layer by layer deposition, are examined for their capacity to generate homogenous, smart films and coatings. A thorough study of characterisation procedures including mechanical testing, thermal stability analysis, barrier property assessment and alcohol vapor sensitivity evaluation is conducted. Recent experimental results indicate that the accurate integration of nanoparticles into carbohydrate matrix markedly improves the sensitivity, selectivity and long-term stability of sensing systems. The discussion focuses on practical applications of these nanoconjugates in identifying food deterioration, detecting alcohol adulteration and monitoring quality across the supply chain. Additionally, the review examines significant industrial and regulatory obstacles such as material scalability, safety adherence and customer perception. Innovative approaches for wireless integration, multi analyte detection and intelligent labeling are proposed as prospective avenues for advancing next generation stimuli triggered sustainable and intelligent packaging. This analysis underscores the viability of carbohydrate based nanoconjugates as effective and sustainable alternatives for advanced food monitoring systems.
