Infopack #1 - Wind farm control co-design: a geometric approach

Wake steering can reduce wake losses and boost wind farm energy production, but it is typically optimised only after the layout is fixed. This work proposes a co-design approach, integrating control directly into layout optimisation.a tailored layout optimisation genetic algorithm (lo-ga) is developed for this purpose. a key contribution is a geometric approach to estimate optimal yaw angles, based on relative turbine positions. The resulting geometric yaw relations extend existing methods by accounting for multiple downstream turbines and adding wind speed filters. for a 16-turbine farm at the hollandse kust noord site, co-design increases annual energy production (AEP) by 0.3–0.4%, up to 0.6% for larger farms. however, gains decrease in low-density layouts or highly directional winds and may turn into losses if wake steering is not applied. a multi-objective co-design limits this risk, ensuring >0.3% gains while keeping losses <0.1%
