Post‐Task Management of Biomedical Microrobots Toward Clinical Translation: Biodegradable and Retrievable Strategies

ABSTRACT Microrobots can access deep tissues and narrow luminal environments through minimally invasive or noninvasive approaches, enabling active navigation, precise localization, real‐time monitoring, targeted therapy, and integrated sensing, imaging, and drug delivery. However, the safe elimination of microrobots after task completion remains a major challenge for clinical translation because the long‐term retention of magnetic particles, metal catalysts, and other functional materials may cause tissue damage, inflammatory responses, and potential toxicity. This review summarizes post‐task management strategies for biomedical microrobots, with a focus on two major approaches: biodegradation and retrieval. The degradation mechanisms, material systems, fabrication technologies, and biomedical applications of biodegradable microrobots are reviewed, along with limitations associated with structural stability, functional integration, and potential safety risks arising from residual magnetic particles. Retrieval strategies, including whole body retrieval and selective retrieval of key functional components, are also discussed, with emphasis on retrieval efficiency, controllability, and off‐target retention. Biodegradable strategies can reduce the need for secondary intervention, whereas retrieval strategies allow the use of high‐performance functional materials. Hybrid approaches combining in vivo degradation with retrieval of key functional components may achieve a better balance between therapeutic performance and biosafety, providing a framework for evaluating post‐task fate and may inform the future clinical translation of micro‐robotic systems.
