VISTA with subepithelial connective tissue autograft versus fascia lata allograft for multiple gingival recessions: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and aesthetic results of the use of vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access (VISTA) with subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) and fascia lata allograft in the treatment of gingival recession in the Cairo RT1 classification. Twenty-six healthy patients with gingival recession were randomly allocated to two groups: Group I (VISTA + SCTG) and Group II (VISTA + double-layer FLA). The clinical measurements that were recorded at baseline, 3, and 6 months after treatment were gingival recession depth (GRD), gingival recession width (GRW), gingival thickness (GT), mean root coverage (MRC), and complete root coverage (CRC). Significant improvements were observed in all clinical parameters in both groups ( p < 0.05). Even though the FLA group achieved comparable results and experienced less patient distress, the SCTG group achieved a greater mean root coverage. In addition, the gingival thickness of the FLA group was greater than that of the SCTG group. Clinical trial number : The study was registered on http://www.clinicaltrials.gov (NCT07467096) on 8 March 2026.
