Evaluation of Treatment Outcomes in Elderly, Senile and Long-lived Patients with Low-energy Osteoporotic Pelvic Ring Fractures

Introduction . The S. Majeed (1989) scale, developed to assess outcomes after high-energy pelvic injuries, contains criteria that are irrelevant for many patients with low-energy osteoporotic pelvic injuries. Purpose of the work is to modify the S. Majeed scale (1989) for assessing treatment outcomes in elderly, senile and long-term patients with low-energy osteoporotic pelvic ring fractures and to validate the modified scale. Materials and methods. We modified the S. Majeed scale (1989) and examined its construct validity in assessing treatment outcomes in 66 patients (mean age 78.7 (8.6) years) with low-energy osteoporotic pelvic ring fractures. We used the EQ‑5D‑3L questionnaire and the Spearman and Kendall rank correlation methods. Results . A strong positive rank correlation was found between the scores of the modified S. A. Majeed scale and the EQ-VAS indices (ρ = 0.792; p < 0.001), as well as a moderate positive correlation with the EQ‑5D‑3L indices (ρ = 0.409; p < 0.001). This proves the construct validity of the modified S. Majeed scale for evaluating treatment outcomes in elderly, senile and long-lived patients with low-energy osteoporotic pelvic ring fractures. Discussion . The moderate, rather than high, correlation between scores on the modified S. A. Majeed scale and the calculated EQ‑5D‑3L indices is a consequence of the instrument’s orthopedic specificity and does not reduce its validity. Conclusion . The modified S. Majeed scale can be used to assess treatment outcomes in elderly, senile and longlived patients with low-energy osteoporotic pelvic ring fractures.
