Reciprocity by Postulate: Born Imposed the x–p Symmetry and Left Its Scale Free
Born's 1938 reciprocity paper proposed a symmetry between position and momentum that would make the universe's large-scale structure mirror its small-scale structure. He built the proposal on a single analogy — the interchange x ↔ p — and left the one quantity the analogy needed, the scale that makes position and momentum comparable, entirely free. The analogy was powerful enough to generate a research program: curved momentum space, a maximum momentum, a minimum length, and a cascade of quantum-gravity phenomenology that treats the Planck scale as the natural completion of the idea. But the analogy was never a derivation. It was a postulate in search of a reason, and the reason was never supplied. This paper supplies the verdict the analogy has been missing. It surveys the program the postulate generated — the curved momentum spaces, the deformed dispersion relations, the doubly special relativities, the relative localities — and shows that every version of it either smuggles in the scale it claims to derive, by choosing a deformation parameter that is simply the Planck scale in disguise, or leaves the scale free, in which case the theory predicts nothing testable at all. The paper's central exhibit is the Fermi LAT bound on Lorentz violation: the most precise test the program has ever faced, and the one that should have decided it. It did not decide it, because a theory with a free scale can always retreat to a scale the experiment has not reached. The verdict is not that reciprocity is wrong. It is that reciprocity, as Born stated it, is not a theory at all — it is a shape waiting for a scale, and no amount of phenomenology can supply a scale that only a derivation can give. The paper closes by stating the one derivation that would change the verdict: a reason, from the structure of measurement itself, why position and momentum must be interchangeable at exactly one scale, and what that scale would have to be.
