Postpartum Rest Plus Urgent Warning Signs: An Ayurvedic Lens on Maternal Health

Deep-research article applying an Ayurvedic lens — labeled traditional education only — to maternal health after birth, asking why postpartum rest must always sit beside, never instead of, urgent warning signs and timed postpartum care. In the United States in 2023, 669 women died of maternal causes (18.6 per 100,000 live births); the rate for Black women was 50.3 per 100,000 live births, significantly higher than white (14.5), Hispanic (12.4), and Asian (10.7) women (Hoyert, NCHS Health E-Stat 100, 2025). Among 1,018 pregnancy-related deaths reviewed in 36 states, 2017-2019, 53% with known timing occurred 7 to 365 days postpartum and committees determined 84% preventable (CDC MMRC). ACOG guidance schedules postpartum contact within 3 weeks and a comprehensive visit by 12 weeks, with sleep and fatigue as named domains (PMID 29683906). At seven weeks postpartum, 57.7% of 2,830 respondents had sleep problems (Dorheim 2009, PMID 19639747), and in 159 women with a history of depression, postpartum poor sleep quality (67.8%) predicted greater mood symptoms (Okun 2023, PMID 37506301). No supplement is recommended, and any herb or vitamin in pregnancy or breastfeeding needs clinician review. Evidence grade: EMERGING for the research conclusion; TRADITIONAL-ONLY for the Ayurvedic framing. Educational article from the Buddha Ayurvedic School of Medicine: https://buddha.hospital
