COSMETIC FORMULATION Principles, Ingredients, Manufacturing, Evaluation and Product Development
Cosmetic formulation is the systematic design of products intended to cleanse, perfume, protect, maintain, or improve the appearance of external parts of the human body. A successful formulation combines suitable ingredients, a reproducible manufacturing process, acceptable sensory properties, package compatibility, microbiological quality, physical and chemical stability, and safety under intended conditions of use. This review describes the scientific and practical principles used to develop common cosmetic products, including creams, lotions, gels, cleansers, shampoos, conditioners, sunscreens, decorative cosmetics, lip products, deodorants, and hair-care preparations. Particular attention is given to the function and selection of water, oils, emollients, humectants, surfactants, emulsifiers, rheology modifiers, preservatives, antioxidants, fragrances, colourants, and functional ingredients. The article also discusses formulation calculations, phase design, mixing and homogenisation, pH adjustment, quality-control testing, stability protocols, packaging, scale-up, documentation, and regulatory considerations. Formulation examples are presented as educational starting points rather than validated commercial recipes. Every formula must be adapted to the grade and supplier specifications of its ingredients and verified through appropriate safety, stability, compatibility, and microbiological testing before consumer use. Keywords: cosmetic formulation; emulsions; surfactants; creams; lotions; gels; preservatives; stability testing; quality control; personal care products.
