THE ROLE OF THE ARTICLE IN THE TITLES OF ENGLISH LITERARY WORKS

The paper considers the article as a meaningful element of English literary titles. On a sample of 80 titles it shows that the definite, indefinite and zero article signal whether the entity named is unique, representative or given, and thus shape the reader's first act of reference.
