Energy-absorbing metamaterials based on DNA helices

The increasing demand for vehicle safety creates a need to develop of efficient protective systems with enhanced energy absorption performance. The results of the development and investigation of energy- absorbing metamaterials based on the DNA chain structure are presented. Computer simulation was carried out for preliminary determination of the metamaterial properties. Samples manufactured from Ti6Al4V alloy by the selective laser melting method were tested under quasi-static and dynamic compression. It was established that the specific energy absorption of the metamaterials under dynamic testing was 32.34 J/g, and under quasi-static testing, 14.22 J/g. The metamaterial withstands deformations exceeding 50 % without failure. The obtained results confirm the promising potential of the developed geometry for producing mechanical metamaterials with enhanced energy-absorbing characteristics.
