The Impact of Tenapanor on Body Composition and Blood Pressure in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients: A Pilot Study

INSTRUCTION: Tenapanor potentially affects fluid volume and blood pressure. This study explored its effects on these parameters in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). METHODS: We conducted a single-arm, prospective observational study that enrolled 10 patients on PD with hyperphosphatemia who were newly initiated on tenapanor. Body composition was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis following tenapanor initiation. RESULTS: At 1 month, total body water, intracellular water, and extracellular water all decreased; however, they returned to baseline by 3 months. Conversely, a reduction in blood pressure was observed at 3 months for both systolic (from 139.2 ± 14.2 to 127.8 ± 9.8 mmHg) and diastolic (from 83.5 ± 12.0 to 76.8 ± 10.0 mmHg) measurements. CONCLUSION: Tenapanor administration decreased fluid volume at 1 month in patients undergoing PD. Although the fluid volume returned to baseline by 3 months, a reduction in blood pressure was observed. Long-term studies are warranted.
