You Can’t Pour from an Empty Cup: Integrating Mindfulness into Experiential Curricula

Outdoor education and counselor education professionals operate in emotionally demanding contexts that require sustained presence, self-awareness, and ethical engagement, yet both fields face growing concerns related to stress and burnout. This paper positions mindfulness as a foundational pedagogical approach to support practitioner development and sustainability. Drawing from existing literature and applied teaching practice, we propose an integrative framework that embeds mindfulness into experiential curricula through structured reflection and intentional engagement. A course-based assignment, “You Can’t Pour from an Empty Cup,” is presented as a replicable model for supporting personal wellness, reflective capacity, and professional identity formation. We argue that mindfulness should be embedded as a core component of experiential pedagogy rather than treated as a supplemental activity.
