Sildenafil as a Diagnostic Tool and Treatment Option for Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome: A Case Report
ABSTRACT: Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) is characterized by activity-related, lower extremity claudication symptoms including exertional calf pain, weakness, cramping, foot paresthesia, and reports of increased calf tension. Diagnosis can be challenging and has overlap with other lower extremity exertional conditions. This case report describes a case of a 21-year-old female athlete presenting with progressive exertional bilateral calf pain during tennis matches recalcitrant to numerous treatment options. A course of sildenafil was noted to provide symptomatic relief and allowed the athlete to participate near pain free temporarily. Her symptoms worsened despite continued sildenafil use with exercise and required surgical intervention. Sildenafil may be a useful diagnostic option in the workup for PAES.
