From themes to thinkers: a bibliometric mapping of microfinance research worldwide

Purpose This study imbibes a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the research in the field of microfinance (MF) over three decades. It traces the development of the intellectual landscape, the thematic structure and geographical spread of its production to identify core research nodes and emerging research directions in social innovation. Design/methodology/approach This study uses an exclusive dataset of more than 2160 documents from Scopus and Web of Science databases, adopting Thematic Mapping Analysis (TMA), Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) and Keyword Analysis (KA) techniques. Findings The analysis shows strong growth and diversification of disciplines. The motor themes of poverty alleviation and micro-credit have remained at the core of the fundamental concepts, but measurable intellectual elements are becoming more prominent, such as sustainability, financial inclusion and Islamic MF. Geographically and institutionally, Mersland R. and the journal World Development are at the forefront, with critical collaborative networks and regional hubs in the US, India and Bangladesh. Practical implications The study provides comprehensive knowledge mapping and actionable insights for policy-makers, practitioners and financial institutions, useful for designing new financial products and evidence-based interventions to drive MF initiatives. Social implications This study provides a foundation for strategies to achieve long-term economic empowerment, inclusiveness and socio-economic stability, by documenting the evolutionary shift from poverty-centric to systemic viability. Originality/value The study provides a comprehensive review of MF research spanning over 30 years. It uniquely captures the changing theoretical paradigms with a combination of financial growth and long-term social impact.
