Forbidden 5-Fold Symmetry: From Penrose Tilings to Physical Quasicrystals — E8 Intelligence Research
FINDING: Crystallographic restriction theorem forbids 5-fold rotational symmetry in periodic lattices, yet Penrose tilings achieve it aperiodically — and real quasicrystals (Shechtman, 1982) realize this forbidden symmetry physically. MATH: - Crystallographic restriction: allowed rotation orders n ∈ {1,2,3,4,6} only. Proof via trace: for rotation by θ, 2cosθ ∈ ℤ, giving cosθ ∈ {±1, ±1/2, 0} → θ = 0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 180°. - Penrose P3 (rhombs): two tiles, acute 72°, obtuse 108°. Inflation factor φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618. - Substitution/deflation: each tile → φ-scaled copies. Self-similar fixed point of the substitution map. - Vertex frequencies in Penrose tiling: ratio of acute:obtuse rhombs → φ (asymptotically). - Ammann bars spacing: long:short = φ. - Quasicrystal diffraction: 5-fold/10-fold Bragg peaks indexed by ℤ[φ] (golden integer ring), not ℤ. - Cut-and-project: 5D hypercubic lattice ℤ⁵ projected onto 2D irrational plane (slope 1/φ) → Penrose tiling.
