The Length Survives, the Growth Does Not: The Jeans Swindle, Repriced

Every student of star formation learns the same clean result: a cloud of gas collapses under its own gravity if it is larger than the Jeans length, λ_J = c_s √(π/Gρ₀), the distance sound crosses in a free-fall time. The derivation behind it, James Jeans's of 1902, contains the most honestly named cheat in astrophysics — the Jeans swindle. Jeans analysed small disturbances on a background that was infinite, uniform, and standing still, and he let only the disturbances gravitate. The background he froze cannot exist: a uniform medium at rest requires its gravitational field to vanish everywhere, but Poisson's equation — the theory's own field equation — requires the field of a uniform density ρ₀ to have divergence 4πGρ₀, which is zero only if ρ₀ is. The background is postulated in defiance of the equation the perturbations are then solved with. This paper prices the swindle in three parts. The inconsistency itself: the discarded term is not a small correction but 100 percent of the background's own field equation, set to zero by hand. The length: re-derived honestly on an expanding background, the instability threshold is the identical expression — the swindle's error at the criterion it is famous for is exactly zero, a cancellation Falco and colleagues proved in 2013 comes from the expansion Jeans did not use. The growth: here the bill arrives. The swindle grows disturbances exponentially; the honest expanding universe grows them as a power law, t^(2/3) for dust. Integrated side by side from identical starting conditions, after five of the swindle's own e-folding times the swindle claims a growth of 74.21 and the honest background delivers 2.28 — an overstatement by a factor of 32.6, widening without limit thereafter. The swindle bought the right length with a background that cannot exist, and paid with a growth law that does not happen. Grade: ONE IMPOSSIBLE BACKGROUND, ONE CORRECT LENGTH, ONE WRONG GROWTH LAW — PRICED. This paper stands outside my work on the vacuum catastrophe; quantum gravity stands not solved in my books, and nothing here moves it. Keywords: Jeans instability; Jeans swindle; gravitational collapse; cosmological perturbation theory; assumed step; census.
