Survey of Iberian zoological medicine veterinarians on the use of parasiticides

There are increasing concerns over the impact of veterinary parasiticide usage, including parasiticide resistance and environmental effects. This study aimed to collect the opinions on parasiticide use and parasiticide resistance in the clinical practice of veterinarians working with zoological medicine animals (nontraditional companion animals, zoological collections and wildlife rehabilitation centers). A survey was carried out, resulting in 169 valid responses from veterinarians in Portugal and Spain. The results characterized their knowledge on responsible parasiticide use policies, their perceptions of the overall usage, and the factors influencing their decision-making process. The survey also assessed the previous use of parasiticides in invertebrates, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals by these professionals. Our results show that most zoological medicine veterinarians in Spain and Portugal are unaware of general policies on responsible use of parasiticides. However, a small percentage reported familiarity with guidelines specific to zoological medicine. Additionally, the information gathered here provides policymakers specific suggestions for promoting evidence-based and responsible practice among veterinarians.
