With the fast-growing development of sites like Twitter/X, Facebook, Reddit, YouTube, and Instagram, there is a great deal of information that has been generated by users which can be analyzed using SOCMINT, natural language processing, machine learning, deep learning, network analysis, and visualizations. SOCMINT is the process of systematic collection, processing, analysis, and interpretation of social media information in order to make sense of information and aid decision making. This paper focuses on the history, techniques, applications, challenges, and future directions of Social Media Intelligence, especially public opinion analysisThe study also discusses the use cases of Social Media Intelligence in political opinion research, public health, brand surveillance, disasters, governance, and public safety. An analytical framework is presented which integrates data gathering, pre-processing, feature extraction, analytics modeling, visualization, interpretation, and decision-making. In addition, the report delves into issues related to privacy, biases, misinformation, surveillance, restrictions, and legalities such as the General Data Protection Regulation and India’s Digital Personal Data Protection model. The new trends in generative artificial intelligence, large language models, multimodal analytics, real-time intelligence, predictive analytics, and explainable AI are also discussed in the report.
