Re-evaluating the Chronology and Imperial Connoisseurship of Northern Song Official Jun Ware: A Micro-Optical and Material Investigation into a Four-Spur Narcissus Basin (SG-JY-001)

This monograph presents a systematic material, typological, and archaeological re-examination of an imperial Jun ware rhombus-shaped narcissus basin (SG-JY-001; dimensions: height 4.6 cm, width 23.1 cm, weight 672 g), addressing the longstanding scholarly dichotomy between Northern Song (ca. 1100–1125) and early Ming attributions. Through high-resolution micro-optical microscopy (100× magnification), physical characterization, and typological contextualization with official kiln excavations at Baguadong, Juntai (Yuzhou, Henan Province), this study demonstrates that SG-JY-001 was produced under strict imperial auspices during the late Northern Song period, specifically aligning with the aesthetic reforms of Emperor Huizong. Diagnostic micro-optical indicators include: 1. Liquid-liquid phase-separation opalescence forming a celestial blue (tianqing) matrix; 2. Spontaneous copper-induced opacified splash transmutation (yaobian) with seamless cloud-mist diffusion; 3. Sub-surface hematite (Fe2O3) nucleation and crystal growth derived from prolonged kiln reduction and slow cooling cycles; 4. Irreversible silicate precipitation within natural glaze pinholes (zongyan); 5. Fully resolved "earthworm tracks" (qiuyin zouni wen) stabilized by mineral percolation; 6. High-density "incense ash" body (xianghuitai) revealed at the fracture planes of four delicate spur marks (zhiding). The application of full-surface glazing supported solely by four minuscule spurs, combined with raised architectural ribs (chujin) derived from archaic bronzes (Xuanhe Bogu Tu), demonstrates a level of uncompromising perfection achievable only within the imperial patronage system of the Northern Song court. Keywords: Northern Song Jun Ware; Official Jun (Guan Jun); Baguadong Kiln; Emperor Huizong; Spur-Fired Technology; Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation; Micro-Optical Analysis; Connoisseurship.

Abstract

This monograph presents a systematic material, typological, and archaeological re-examination of an imperial Jun ware rhombus-shaped narcissus basin (SG-JY-001; dimensions: height 4.6 cm, width 23.1 cm, weight 672 g), addressing the longstanding scholarly dichotomy between Northern Song (ca. 1100–1125) and early Ming attributions. Through high-resolution micro-optical microscopy (100× magnification), physical characterization, and typological contextualization with official kiln excavations at Baguadong, Juntai (Yuzhou, Henan Province), this study demonstrates that SG-JY-001 was produced under strict imperial auspices during the late Northern Song period, specifically aligning with the aesthetic reforms of Emperor Huizong. Diagnostic micro-optical indicators include: 1. Liquid-liquid phase-separation opalescence forming a celestial blue (tianqing) matrix; 2. Spontaneous copper-induced opacified splash transmutation (yaobian) with seamless cloud-mist diffusion; 3. Sub-surface hematite (Fe2O3) nucleation and crystal growth derived from prolonged kiln reduction and slow cooling cycles; 4. Irreversible silicate precipitation within natural glaze pinholes (zongyan); 5. Fully resolved "earthworm tracks" (qiuyin zouni wen) stabilized by mineral percolation; 6.
