ALTO Marketing Strategy Preprint v1
Standard launch practice puts a campaign behind every product and the heaviest push behind the first launch. This paper introduces ALTO (Air-Launch-to-Orbit), a framework that reverses that order. Named after the aerospace method in which a carrier aircraft releases a rocket at altitude and the rocket fires its engines only then, ALTO makes the first launch fully live but quiet in promotion and saves the heavier pushes for after it. The quiet launch establishes a cornerstone, the reputation and reference price that later releases inherit, and gives independent sources time to accumulate, so the eventual push reaches people who have already heard about the product elsewhere. ALTO applies to a single product line, such as an artist's early singles and debut album followed by heavier promotion of later singles and a second album, and it scales to multi-product firms, whose existing products can also serve as carriers. It is distinct from in-house co-branding and licensing. The paper grounds the framework in diffusion research and in persuasion and network evidence that messages from multiple independent sources carry more weight. Under benchmark parameters of the Generalized Bass Model, a push of a given size yields up to 3.7 times more immediate adoptions when timed near the adoption peak than at launch, and an inherited base equal to 10% of the market cuts time to 10% adoption by 46%. Immediate yield is not the whole ledger: when every dollar of advertising works, the same push is worth more in present value at launch, which is why classic models front-load. ALTO's case rests instead on an advertising threshold, a spending level below which advertising produces essentially no response. Above the threshold, front-loading pays; below it, a launch push is wasted, and a quiet launch builds the familiarity and revenue that can carry a later push over it. The paper states ten testable hypotheses and describes two cases: a completed single-product release sequence and a software launch now under way.
