Perla undetermined Geoffroy 1762

Perla sp. Geoffroy, 1762 = Perla grandis Rambur, 1842 in Lavandier (1979). TAXO. This taxon corresponds to the female imagos and larvae mentioned in the previous paragraph, i. e. identified as P. grandis before Reding (2023). We supposed that all Perla sp. are P. pyrenaica, but due to the difficulty in identifying both larvae and female imagos, in particular in the absence of ovocyte description, we decided to temporarily name these individuals Perla sp .. Note that our molecular data on one larva (PP 348523) highlight a probable different haplotype from the alpine species P. grandis (query cover 100 % with 97.57 % identity) compared to a Spanish haplotype from Asturias (query cover 100 % with 99.24 % identity). DIST. Perla sp., which we suspect to be P. pyrenaica, is present in the middle and lower reaches of the Estaragne and on the tributary a 5. Female adults captured upstream (sites A, a 1, and R) were probably linked to dispersal, as no larvae were captured there (Table 3). Note that Perla sp. is autochthonous and very abundant at downstream reaches (sites C and D), a similar biotope of the vicariant alpine species P. grandis (Fig. 3 B), whereas the type locality of P. pyrenaica is at site a 1 where the species may not complete its entire life cycle (only adults captured). DIFF. Given the lack of certainty about the larvae and females of P. pyrenaica, we prefer to remain cautious and rename the species P. grandis in the Lavandier’s dataset as Perla sp. instead of P. pyrenaica pending future work on the P. grandis complex in order to ensure that several species of this group are not sympatric.
