Design and Comparative Analysis of Binary vs. Gray Code Pointers in Asynchronous FIFO for Clock Domain Crossing Applications
This research paper presents the design and comparative analysis of Binary and Gray Code Pointers in Asynchronous FIFO for Clock Domain Crossing Applications. An Asynchronous FIFO is used to transfer data between two different clock domains. This research compares two FIFO architectures: Variant A, which uses Binary-to-Gray code conversion before pointer synchronization, and Variant B, which directly synchronizes binary pointers. The main objective is to study metastability, Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), hardware resource utilization, maximum operating frequency and power consumption. Both designs are implemented using Verilog-2001. A randomized and self-checking testbench is used to evaluate their functionality under different clock frequency conditions. The study shows the advantages of Gray code pointers in reducing metastability risks during clock domain crossing. It also discusses the trade-offs between reliability, hardware area, operating speed and power consumption. Keywords: Asynchronous FIFO, Binary Code, Gray Code, Clock Domain Crossing, Metastability, MTBF, Verilog, FPGA and Synchronizer.
