Axial Compression Properties of a Novel Octopus‐Inspired Lattice Structure

Lattice structures are widely valued for high energy absorption (EA) efficiency and lightweight features. To further improve the EA efficiency and deformation stability, this study proposes a novel biomimetic octopus lattice structure (OLS) inspired by the unique claw morphology of octopuses. The OLS sample was fabricated using selective laser sintering, and axial compression experiments were performed to validate the accuracy of finite element analysis (FEA). OLS exhibits superior EA capability through the unique fence‐type deformation pattern. To systematically explore its mechanical potential, the influence of key geometric parameters on the compression performance of OLS was investigated. Results demonstrate that EA is significantly enhanced with increased wall thickness. Specifically, the specific energy absorption (SEA) value of an OLS with 1.0 mm thickness is 79.82% higher than that with 0.6 mm. The layer number critically influences performance, with the six‐layer OLS increasing SEA by 193.81% compared with the two‐layer OLS. The two‐layer OLS exhibits a lantern‐type deformation pattern. In summary, the OLS demonstrates remarkable EA properties and a unique deformation pattern, offering innovative insights for the design of high‐efficiency EA devices.
