Iteaphilidae Wahlberg & Johanson 2018

Iteaphilidae Wahlberg & Johanson, 2018 Type genus: Iteaphila Zetterstedt, 1838. Recognition. The family Iteaphilidae comprises relatively small flies (body 2–4 mm), distinguished from other family groups of Empidoidea by the following combination of characters: body usually blackish grey, long antennae, a distinctly elongate proboscis and palpi (usually forward-directed and subequal in length), slender legs, a humped thorax covered with numerous fine hair-like setae, prosternum isolated, not fused to proepisternum; R 4+5 branched or unbranched; cell dm usually truncate apically (Sinclair & Shamshev 2021; Sinclair et al. 2023). Included genera. Iteaphila Zetterstedt (54 species) and Paraiteaphila Sinclair & Shamshev (7 species). Remarks. Extant Iteaphilidae are restricted to the Holarctic Region. The family can be identified from similar family groups using the key to genera of Nearctic Empidoidea (exclusive of Dolichopodidae s.str.) (Sinclair et al. 2023). Sinclair & Shamshev (2021) provided a key to genera and species groups of Iteaphilidae.
