Apatania stylata Navas 1916

Apatania stylata Navás, 1916 TAXO. The taxonomic status and the distribution of A. stylata remain uncertain. While the Distribution Atlas of European Trichoptera (DAET) (Neu et al. 2018; Schmidt-Kloiber et al. 2015) considers it as a single species occurring in both the Pyrenees and Sweden, this discontinuous distribution pattern lacks a clear justification. Thus, experts like Hans Malicky and Peter Wiberg-Larsen have questioned the presence of A. stylata in Sweden (Gullefors 2015). Before that, Svensson and Tjeder (1975) have suggested the existence of a subspecies, A. stylata scandinavica Svensson & Tjeder, 1975, but without providing a formal description, relying solely on Forsslund’s unpublished observations from 1953. In addition, Waringer and Graf (2019) expressed doubts about A. stylata scandinavica being a subspecies of a form primarily found in the Iberian-Macaronesian region and the Pyrenees. On their side, Graf et al. (2026) and Gullefors (2015) considered that A. stylata scandinavica should be considered as a valid species, i. e. A. scandinavica Svensson & Tjeder, 1975 rare and restricted to Eastern Lapland. We thereby suggest that A. stylata should be considered endemic to the Pyrenees and possibly to the Iberian-Macaronesian region, with northern European records from the DAET likely erroneous.

Abstract

Apatania stylata Navás, 1916 TAXO. The taxonomic status and the distribution of A. stylata remain uncertain. While the Distribution Atlas of European Trichoptera (DAET) (Neu et al. 2018; Schmidt-Kloiber et al. 2015) considers it as a single species occurring in both the Pyrenees and Sweden, this discontinuous distribution pattern lacks a clear justification. Thus, experts like Hans Malicky and Peter Wiberg-Larsen have questioned the presence of A. stylata in Sweden (Gullefors 2015).
