Meaning in the face of adversity: a psychobiographical analysis of Ludwig van Beethoven through Viktor Frankl's logotherapy

This existential psychobiographical study examines how meaning is sustained in the face of enduring adversity through Viktor Frankl's logotherapeutic framework, using the life of Ludwig van Beethoven as a paradigmatic case. Employing a theory-driven analytic strategy, the study interrogates primary sources—including correspondence, the Heiligenstadt Testament, and historical accounts—to map the manifestation of the will to meaning across the composer's lifespan. The findings reveal that Beethoven's resilience was anchored in three interrelated pathways: creative values, which functioned as his central existential axis; experiential values, offering transient moments of self-transcendence through nature and relationship; and attitudinal values, which emerged as the ultimate expression of freedom when suffering became unavoidable. By choosing endurance over resignation, Beethoven illustrates the capacity to transmute tragedy into ethical and artistic purpose. These findings extend the application of logotherapy to creative biography, offering a nuanced understanding of how agency is preserved under immutable conditions.
