Huge Osteochondroma of Right Iliac Crest: A Case Report
Osteochondroma is the most common benign bone tumour, it arises from the metaphysis of long bone. Involvement of flat bones such as iliac crest is rare and may pose diagnostic challenges in long-standing cases. The authors report a case of a 51-year-old male who presented with painless, progressively enlarging swelling over the right iliac region since 30 years causing cosmetic deformity and inconvenience. The patient underwent surgical excision of the lesion. Histopathological examination showed cartilage-capped bony lesion with hyaline cartilage, chondrocytes in lacunae and underlying endochondral ossification, confirming the diagnosis of osteochondroma without malignancy. The present case is notable for its rare location, unusually large size and delayed presentation. It highlights the importance of clinical and radiological correlation and histopathological confirmation of osteochondroma at rare site. Complete excision resulted in excellent functional outcome with no recurrence at one year follow-up.
