Leveling-Up Job Offer Negotiations: Presenting an AI Chatbot Exercise

The purpose of this article is to help students prepare for job offer negotiations. Although resources to help students practice job offer negotiations exist, these activities primarily use peer role-play and may be constrained by synchronous scheduling and limited individualized feedback. We present a fully customizable artificial intelligence negotiation chatbot that supplements, rather than replaces, peer role-play. The exercise provides late undergraduate and graduate students with a low-stakes, repeatable setting in which to rehearse job offer negotiation preparation, requests, and responses at their own pace while receiving individualized feedback. Because chatbot practice does not reproduce the nonverbal communication, reciprocal interpersonal responses, perspective-taking, and relationship-management demands of a human negotiation partner, instructors should use the exercise alongside peer role-play and related human interaction.
