Hubungan Usia dan Lama Kerja dengan Gangguan Okular pada Petugas Penanganan Prasarana dan Sarana Umum (PPSU) di Jakarta

Chronic ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure is associated with several ocular disorders, particularly cataract and pterygium. Previous studies have largely focused on rural populations such as farmers and fishermen, while evidence among urban outdoor workers remains limited. This study examined the association between worker characteristics and ocular disorders among Public Infrastructure and Facilities Maintenance Officers (Petugas Penanganan Prasarana dan Sarana Umum [PPSU]) in Jakarta, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 53 PPSU workers in South Jakarta. Data included age, sex, duration of employment, and ocular examination findings. Cataract and pterygium were identified through direct eye examinations. Descriptive statistics summarized participant characteristics and ocular disorder prevalence. Associations between independent variables and cataract were assessed using Fisher’s Exact Test and Prevalence Ratios (PR). Robust Poisson regression was used to estimate adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR). Cataract was detected in 22.6% of participants, despite a mean age of 38.77 years. Workers aged ≥40 years had a substantially higher cataract prevalence than those aged <40 years (PR=12.32; 95% CI: 1.71–88.77). After adjustment for employment duration, age remained independently associated with cataract (aPR=3.14; 95% CI: 1.48–6.67; p=0.003). Employment duration was not significantly associated with cataract after adjustment (aPR=1.51; 95% CI: 0.46–4.96; p=0.496). No significant associations were observed for pterygium. Ocular disorders were common among urban outdoor workers. Older age was independently associated with cataract. These findings support regular eye screening, UV protection, and preventive occupational health programs for outdoor workers in tropical settings.
