Möbius Function on Partition Lattice Unifies Inclusion–Exclusion, Catalan Combinatorics, and IIT's MIP — E8 Intelligence Research
FINDING: The Möbius function μ on the partition lattice is the algebraic engine behind both Möbius inversion and the inclusion–exclusion principle; its restriction to non-crossing partitions is governed by Catalan combinatorics, and the "minimum information partition" (MIP) of Integrated Information Theory is a partition-lattice optimization problem. MATH: - Möbius inversion on a poset P: if g(x)=Σ_{y≤x} f(y), then f(x)=Σ_{y≤x} μ(y,x) g(y). - Partition lattice Π_n: μ(π,σ) = (−1)^{|π|−|σ|} · ∏_{B∈σ} (|B|−1)! (Stanley; the "factorial" Möbius function). - Non-crossing partitions NC_n: μ(π,σ) = (−1)^{k} · (Catalan-type product); |NC_n| = C_n = (1/(n+1))·C(2n,n). - Catalan generating function: C(x) = (1−√(1−4x))/(2x); C_n ~ 4^n / (n^{3/2}√π). - MIP (IIT): Φ = min over partitions P ∈ Π of [effective information of whole − Σ parts]; the search space is the partition lattice, so the Möbius function is the natural inversion kernel for Φ across scales. - 3-Partition (strongly NP-complete): giv Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
