Heavy Bleeding Is Not Just Imbalance: An Ayurvedic Lens on Uterine Fibroids
Deep-research article applying an Ayurvedic lens — labeled traditional education only — to uterine fibroids, asking why heavy bleeding must not be renamed as just imbalance or normal. In ultrasound screening of 1,364 women aged 35-49, estimated cumulative incidence by age 50 was more than 80% for Black women and nearly 70% for white women (Baird 2003, PMID 12548202). In a weighted US survey of 59,411 respondents, severe heavy menstrual bleeding was reported by 16.7% of women with fibroids versus 7.7% of controls, and 56.4% of symptomatic women rated heavy bleeding extremely bothersome (Fuldeore 2017, PMID 28652819). In a national survey of 968 women with symptomatic fibroids, women waited an average of 3.6 years before seeking care (Borah 2013, PMID 23891629), and interviews with 60 women identified an altered perception of normal as a central reason for delay (Ghant 2016, PMID 27195902). A 2025 rapid evidence review defines the evaluation: history, examination, and transvaginal plus transabdominal ultrasound first (Keating 2025, PMID 41118184). Shrinkage evidence for supplements is thin, no supplement is recommended, and heavy bleeding needs evaluation, hemoglobin and iron testing as a clinician orders, and shared decisions. Evidence grade: EMERGING for the research conclusion; TRADITIONAL-ONLY for the Ayurvedic framing. Educational article from the Buddha Ayurvedic School of Medicine: https://buddha.hospital
