Teaching Power BI to a Health Sciences Audience
With the emergence of data librarianship, there has been a high demand for classes in data related courses. To fill this gap, Region 7 of the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) reached out to Jocelyn Swick-Jemison (Health Sciences Data Librarian at the University at Buffalo) to put on the course “Region 7 Presents: Creating a Data Dashboard with Power BI” after attending a previous iteration hosted by Jocelyn. We used a dataset from the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) based on a survey of U.S. adults conducted by the National Cancer Institute between 2017 and 2020 on internet access to cater to a health sciences audience. After completing the first part of the class, participants can create an interactive dashboard using real national health survey data. We received plenty of feedback that led to a second part of this class.
