Emergency Pedagogies: Organic Knowledge and Pedagogical Sovereignty Beyond the Technocratic Curriculum

Curricular standardization and accountability can narrow the space in which teachers interpret complex classroom realities. This conceptual essay develops emergency pedagogies as a heuristic for examining the situated pedagogical knowledge that arises when prescribed curricula are insufficient for context-specific educational needs. The term emergency has a double meaning: it denotes both urgent conditions that interrupt curricular plans and forms of professional judgment that emerge through teachers’ responses to those conditions. Drawing on critical curriculum theory, the concepts of hidden and null curricula, and decolonial perspectives, the essay argues that emergency pedagogies are not unprincipled improvisations. They are relational, ethically accountable acts of curricular interpretation shaped by students, communities, territories and institutional constraints. The argument is particularly relevant to Ecuador and comparable Global South contexts, where standardized frameworks may inadequately represent plurinational, intercultural and socioeconomic diversity. Recognizing emergency pedagogies does not entail rejecting public curricula or professional standards. Rather, it supports pedagogical sovereignty: the collective capacity of teachers, students and communities to interpret, adapt and transform curriculum while remaining answerable for educational purposes and consequences. The essay concludes by outlining implications for curriculum policy, teacher education, and evaluation.
