Cybersecurity Awareness and Secure Use of University Information Systems among Postgraduate Students in Mogadishu Somalia

University information systems require students to make security decisions while accessing learning resources, communicating with supervisors and managing academic information. This article examines how cybersecurity awareness can support secure system use among postgraduate students in Mogadishu, Somalia. It adopts a structured integrative review of Somali student research, a separately identified Somaliland comparator, international behavioural security studies and current technical guidance. The synthesis distinguishes knowledge, self-efficacy, intentions, self-reported practices and observed behaviour. A Mogadishu study involving 250 students establishes local research relevance, while a Somali survey of 388 students includes 158 postgraduates but measures perceptions and self-efficacy rather than verified security outcomes. The reviewed evidence does not establish the prevalence of insecure university-system use among Mogadishu postgraduates or a causal effect of awareness training. It instead supports a conditional explanation in which knowledge must be converted into practical capability and supported by usable controls, accessible assistance and credible reporting arrangements. The article proposes a framework linking contextualised learning, capability and institutional opportunity to account protection, phishing response, research-data handling and incident reporting. It develops an implementation sequence, a measurement matrix and a prospective evaluation design that avoids collecting passwords or treating training attendance as proof of security. Recommendations prioritise secure authentication, recovery support, realistic learning tasks, non-punitive reporting and privacy-preserving evaluation. No primary data, pooled effect estimate or new machinelearning result is reported. The contribution is a postgraduate-focused account of the evidence and a practical, testable framework for improving secure participation in university information systems.
