The Impact of Septal Surgery on Hearing

Objective: Septal surgery is a common surgical procedure to correct deviated nasal septum to alleviate nasal obstruction and improve overall nasal function. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of septal surgery on hearing among patients who are suffering from DNS in Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Methods: This prospective observational study was carried out in the department of Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery, Chittagong Medical College Hospital, Chattogram. Sample was selected by purposive sampling technique. Hearing assessment were done by pure tone audiogram (PTA) before and after surgery at 4th , 8th and 12th week and the results were compared and analyzed to see the outcome. Results: There was marked improvement in ear fullness at 8 weeks post operatively and even more at 12weeks post operatively. Baseline 100% cases had mild conductive hearing loss in PTA. Hearing improvement occurs in 53(70.7%) patients at 4th, 58(77.3%) at 8th and in 65(86.7%) patients at 12th week follow up. The hearing improvement in PTA was statistically significant from preoperative to postoperative findings in affected side (p=0.019). Conclusion: Present study concluded that deviated nasal septum can be related to mild hearing loss & septal surgery may help restore both in the ears of affected side.
