Dynamic power quality enhancement in renewable grid with interleaved active clamp converter powered unified power flow controller

Introduction. The increasing integration of renewable energy sources, particularly photovoltaic (PV) systems, has significantly influenced modern power systems by promoting sustainable energy generation. However, large-scale PV penetration introduces operational challenges such as voltage instability, uncontrolled power flow, and deterioration of power quality (PQ). Variations in solar irradiance and partial shading conditions further complicate stable grid operation, requiring advanced converter technologies and intelligent control strategies to ensure reliable PV grid integration. Problem. To improve voltage regulation, power flow management, and PQ in grid-connected PV systems while maintaining efficient maximum power extraction under dynamic operating conditions. Goal. To develop a decoupled neural network (DNN)-based control strategy for a closed-loop unified power flow controller (UPFC) integrated with an interleaved active clamp boost (IACB) converter and coyote optimization algorithm – radial basis function neural network – maximum power point tracking (COA-RBFNN MPPT) to improve power flow regulation, voltage stability and PQ under dynamic renewable grid conditions. Methodology. For independent active and reactive power regulation, the system combines a UPFC with shunt and series converters. An IACB converter offers high voltage gain while reducing ripple and switching losses. A hybrid COA-RBFNN MPPT approach allows accurate tracking even in partial shade. An LC filter is used to reduce harmonics, and grid synchronization is improved via DNN control using decoupled double synchronous reference frame-based pulse width modulation. Results. MATLAB simulation results confirm steady operation and increased PQ with 96 % overall converter efficiency, 98.9 % MPPT tracking efficiency, and 1.52 % total harmonic distortion. Scientific novelty. Combination of hybrid intelligent MPPT, a high-gain IACB converter, and UPFC-based grid control for improved PV system performance. Practical value. The proposed work enhances energy efficiency, PQ, and grid reliability, which allows it for advanced renewable energy integration and smart grid applications. References 29, tables 1, figures 25.

Abstract

Introduction. The increasing integration of renewable energy sources, particularly photovoltaic (PV) systems, has significantly influenced modern power systems by promoting sustainable energy generation. However, large-scale PV penetration introduces operational challenges such as voltage instability, uncontrolled power flow, and deterioration of power quality (PQ). Variations in solar irradiance and partial shading conditions further complicate stable grid operation, requiring advanced converter technologies and intelligent control strategies to ensure reliable PV grid integration.
