STRATEGIC PLANNING AND THE ADOPTION OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN NIGERIAN TELECOMMUNICATION COMPANIES
The rapid evolution of information and communication technologies has significantly transformed the global telecommunications industry, compelling organizations to adopt emerging technologies to remain competitive. This study examines the role of strategic planning in the adoption of emerging technologies in Nigerian telecommunication companies. A survey research design was adopted, targeting managerial and supervisory staff of major telecommunication firms in Nigeria. Based on industry data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (2023), a population of 12,000 employees was identified, from which a sample size of 400 respondents was determined using the Taro Yamane sample size determination formula. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and the chi-square test of significance. The findings reveal that strategic planning has a significant influence on the adoption of emerging technologies such as 4G, 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence within the Nigerian telecommunication sector. The study concludes that effective strategic planning enhances organizational readiness, innovation capacity, and sustained competitive advantage. The paper recommends that telecommunication companies institutionalize comprehensive strategic planning frameworks and that policymakers create supportive environments that encourage technology-driven transformation.
