Range extensions and current distributions of Common genet Genetta genetta and Egyptian free-tailed bat Nyctinomus aegyptiacus in Mauritania and the broader region
Abstract The mammalian fauna of Mauritania remains poorly documented, especially in its hyper-arid inland regions at the intersection of the Palearctic and Afrotropical realms. During a survey in the Adrar region (January 2025), we documented new locations for the Egyptian free-tailed bat Nyctinomus aegyptiacus and the Common genet Genetta genetta . Using distribution maps covering Mauritania, Western Sahara and Morocco, we contextualise and discuss our records. These findings extend known species ranges and emphasise the value of even brief surveys for understanding Mauritania’s mammalian diversity and informing conservation needs.
