A linear algebra extension activity: Markov interpolation

Markov chains are a staple of the undergraduate linear algebra textbook. Even students who have seen only the basics of matrix multiplication and matrix powers are likely to encounter a simple example of a Markov chain, and one particular application is often used to introduce that concept. For both beginning and advanced students, we present an extension activity that will help solidify their grasp of the topic.

Abstract

Markov chains are a staple of the undergraduate linear algebra textbook. Even students who have seen only the basics of matrix multiplication and matrix powers are likely to encounter a simple example of a Markov chain, and one particular application is often used to introduce that concept. For both beginning and advanced students, we present an extension activity that will help solidify their grasp of the topic.
