Development of Si Pitung Picture Storybooks Based on Local Wisdom for Scientific Literacy
Contextual instructional innovation requires learning resources that connect scientific concepts with pupils’ cultural experiences while supporting systematic educational planning. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the illustrated storybook “Si Pitung Protects the River Ecosystem” as a locally grounded instructional resource for primary school scientific literacy. A Research and Development approach using the ADDIE model guided needs analysis, instructional design, product development, classroom implementation, and evaluation. The trial involved 32 Grade III pupils. Data were obtained from observations, interviews, expert validation, teacher and pupil practicality questionnaires, and pre-tests and post-tests. The storybook achieved 99.29% validity and 95.89% practicality. The mean scientific literacy score increased from 41.41 to 68.44, with an N-Gain of 0.4377, indicating moderate improvement. These results support structured, evidence-informed decisions concerning the design and classroom adoption of culturally contextualized visual resources. The study contributes to instructional design innovation and educational resource management; the development of interactive digital versions remains a direction for future research rather than an outcome tested in this study.
