Integration of genomic selection and assisted embryo technologies for precision cattle breeding: opportunities, challenges and global perspectives

Modern cattle breeding increasingly integrates genomic selection (GS) with assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) to accelerate genetic gain and enhance herd productivity. This review examines the synergistic application of GS and embryo-based technologies in dairy and beef cattle, and evaluates their potential to support precision breeding strategies. Relevant literature on genomic evaluation, embryo technologies and embryo-based breeding programs was synthesized to summarize current developments, opportunities, challenges, and global adoption patterns. ARTs, including artificial insemination, multiple ovulation and embryo transfer, in vitro embryo production, ovum pick-up, cryopreservation, and embryo biopsy, facilitate rapid multiplication of elite genetics and enable preimplantation selection. When combined with GS, these technologies allow estimation of genomic breeding values at early developmental stages, thereby reducing generation intervals, increasing selection intensity and improving the rate of genetic gain. Integrated breeding programs can also support targeted improvement of economically important traits (e.g. fertility, disease resistance, feed efficiency, production performance). Despite these advantages, practical implementation requires consideration of economic costs, technical expertise, infrastructure, recipient availability, and strategies to manage inbreeding and maintain genetic diversity. Global adoption varies considerably; highly integrated genomic and embryo-based breeding systems are well established in some countries (e.g. US, Australia) whereas emerging applications in regions including India, China, Brazil and Pakistan reflect varying levels of technological capacity and industry development. Emerging and developing approaches, including genome editing, artificial intelligence-assisted embryo evaluation and noninvasive embryo selection, together with continued improvements in established genomic prediction systems, are expected to further enhance precision breeding. Overall, integration of GS and ARTs represents a transformative approach for accelerating sustainable genetic improvement in cattle while supporting efficient and responsible breeding programs.
