The Criterion-Relative Outcome-Process Divergence Principle (CROPD): A Conceptual, Formal, and Methodological Blueprint for Separating Outcome Status from Process Status

AbstractThis manuscript proposes the Criterion-Relative Outcome-Process Divergence Principle (CROPD), a framework for analysing cases in which the status assigned to an outcome differs from the status assigned to the process through which that outcome was reached or identified. Its primary illustrative case, the Extraordinary-Path Ordinary-Identity Discovery Case (EPOID), describes an ordinary feature or identity being identified through an unusually intensive, complex, or non-standard exploratory pathway. The framework's central mechanism, the Process Outcome Status-Decoupling Mechanism (POSDM), requires outcomes and processes to be defined, measured, and classified separately before their relationship is interpreted. The manuscript specifies core constructs, reference classes, classification functions, a conditional divergence indicator, temporal representations, operational variables, a four-cell taxonomy, candidate propositions, testable hypotheses, boundary conditions, alternative explanations, and a validation roadmap. It also distinguishes descriptive status contrast from causal attribution and from evaluative judgments such as quality, efficiency, or moral worth. CROPD is presented as a proposed conceptual and methodological architecture, not as an empirically validated universal law. No original dataset or empirical test is claimed in this manuscript. The principal research task is to establish construct validity, demonstrate reliable operationalization, compare the framework systematically with adjacent literature, and test whether joint process-outcome analysis adds useful explanatory information in carefully delimited domains. Keywords: process-outcome relations; classification; reference classes; operationalization; divergence; measurement; causal inference; theory development; exploratory discovery
