Learning Vocabulary in Moroccan Arabic: An Intensive Immersion Study: An Intensive Immersion Study

The current mixed methods research focuses on the vocabulary learning strategies employed by 15 American university students participating in a 63-day Moroccan Arabic immersion program in Morocco. All participants took part in three-hour long classes each day and lived with Moroccan host families. Quantitative data was collected using a Likert scale questionnaire including 36 items assessing the frequency of reported vocabulary learning strategies. The qualitative data was acquired from 42 open-ended questions regarding participants’ experience and adaptation of the strategies. Most commonly employed were social strategies (M = 3.97) followed by cognitive strategies (M = 3.77), while the least frequently mentioned were technology and media strategies (M = 2.03). The most frequent vocabulary learning strategies included note-taking (M = 4.60), conversation (M = 4.33), and teacher clarification (M = 4.27). It is worth mentioning that the qualitative results pointed out the significance of interaction with native speakers, systematic note-taking, differences between Darija and MSA, problems with orthography, as well as classroom and homestay learning.
